BoilerMacR's 2009 NFL Mock Draft v3

1. Detroit Lions (0-9) – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

Yes, I know....the Lions have picked WR time and time again, and they have a bunch of other needs. But before thinking this is some big joke, hear me out. And no, it's no joke. :)

I am predicting Michael Crabtree will end up as the overall #1 - no matter who is selecting number one in the draft. What's more, it doesn't mean Detroit ultimately keeps him, but my bet is Crabtree goes #1 to the Lions if they have the first pick.

Lest one forgets, the Lions also have an additional first round selection from the Cowboys, so they can ultimately get Crabtree & a top offensive tackle in round one.

Or, the Lions could select Crabtree with the 1st pick and trade down to add more picks in later rounds from a team (like the Seahawks, Bears or Vikings) who are desperately in need of a game-changer at wideout.

10.New Orleans Saints (4-5) – Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest

11. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-5) – Taylor Mays, S, USC

12. San Diego Chargers (4-5) – Everette Brown, DE, FSU

13. Green Bay Packers (4-5) – William Moore, FS, Missouri

I consider this mock a joke with crabtree going 1 to detroit. They have ALOT stronger needs then WR as WR is a strength on their team. They need QB, OT, CB, MLB, DE before considering a WR!

Agreed. Detroit will probably go with the top ranked OT followed by a defensive playmaker at the LB position or DL position(s). I do not believe Detroit goes with a QB in this draft, at all.

Drew Stantons my boy and will start the 2009-2010 season so with their first Pick they will get OT Micheal Oher Ole Miss or DE Micheal Johnson Georgia Tech, with their second first round pick they will get OLB Arron Curry Wake Forrest or if a dominant ILB like Rey Maualuga USC or James Laurinitis OSU drop to us mid first round pick 15-20 the Lions won't pass on either of the two

Hey guys....thanks for the replies.

And no, it's no joke. :)

I am predicting Michael Crabtree will end up as the overall #1 - no matter who is selecting number one in the draft.

It doesn't mean Detroit ultimately keeps him, but my bet is Crabtree goes #1 to the Lions if they have the first pick. They may try to use him as a way to get some more picks in later rounds from a team (like the Seahawks, Bears or Vikings) who are desperately in need of a game-changer at wideout.

The Lions new regime will not take a WR at #1 pick....come up with realistic draft....your first selection blew up the entire draft...look for a LT or DE, no QB rated that high...

I'm sorry dude but there is no way the lions are going wide out until day 2 of the draft because they have a lot of money invested in Calvin Johnson and Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald they have to many other holes to fill and wide out is a position on this team with a lot of depth. If I where the lions gm I'd go this way.
1- Michael Oher Ole Miss- The lions will go 0-16 so they are in yet another rebuilding year and why not start by doing the logical thing of building from the inside out.
1- D.J Moore CB Vandy- He just came off a great showing having two TD passes cought as a wide out a sack and a pick along with a lot of tackles and plus corner is HUGE need for the lions on D.
2- Brandon Spikes MLB Florida- I see the lions having three key holes to fill on defense being LB CB and DE I think they would trade down with a guy like Al Davis who would covet Crabtree and maybe pick up an extra second but this is without trades so they should take a guy who is a tackling machine and should fit into any defensive scheme.
3- Bandon Graham DE Michigan- This guy is beast and should go by the end of the second round but could fall because of durability issues or having a bad combine which is plausible so the lions pick up a great pass rusher who can simply just break up sweeps or redirect runs as well as primarily getting to the quarterback this guy can just play.
3- James Davis HB Clemson- I see Davis faling due to having questions of being able to carry the load and the simple lack of need for running backs in this draft, I think this guy is a complete back who could compete for carries with Kevin Smith in the detroit backfield.
5- Brandon Swain DE Queens University- Ok now I know your looking at queens and saying "are you sure this guy can play on Sunday's" well if you let this guys stats speak for him I think he'll be a good candidate if you count his 14.5 sacks last year in 07 and 5 forced fumbles with a pick as a defensive end.
6- Sammie Slaughter KR- Aevion Cason cannot get it done and maybe a reason why th lions keep getting down by like 21-0 in the first half is because they have no field position so I would go with the speedy kick returner thats got some explosive and game changing ability.
6- Carson Butler TE Michigan- Remember this guy... well if you don't I don't blame you he was a pretty good tight end for Michigan back when Lloyd Carr was the coach but sense Rich Rod came in he has been benched for Kevin Koger I think that Carson can be a good tight end who can block and has the physical ability to be a red zone threat in the pros.

anonymous(1).....lol....this is a mock draft that isn't going to blow up anything. It's just speculation.

anonymous(2).....too many dudes from universities located in Michigan, but yes, I know about the guy from Queens.

Repeat after me fellas: "Michael Crabtree will go #1 in the draft"....ahead of an OT.

Can ya say it too?

I knew that you could !! :)

Sorry, but I hope the new GM has more sense then to draft Crabtree if the first pick belongs to the Lions. We tried the "draft a guy and try to trade him" deal with Calvin Johnson, hopefully the new staff is not going to make that same mistake twice.

If you think the Lions are going to make a trade, then put down the trade. It does stretch the realm of plausibility when you have Detroit taking him. I would be interested what you think the #1 overall pick is worth considering you're so high on Crabtree.

I think a DT is far more important for the Lions than a DE, considering the lack of anything resembling a nose tackle on their roster. Terrence Cody would look pretty good stuffing the inside run. And we all know that if you can't stop the run, it doesn't matter what kind of QB pressure you can apply (not they have any of that either).

myth:

The pick is plausible, but perhaps not probable. But it is still my opinion that it is reasonable enough to be considered.

I have no idea what the #1 pick would be worth - I guess it will/would depend on the team desiring Crabtree.

How many teams out there are a stellar wideout playmaker away from being explosive? I can think of a few off the top of my head:

Bears, 49ers, Bucs, Dolphins, Texans, etc.,etc.

Again, he may not fit the "immediate needs" aspect of the Lions, but they certainly would have to consider selecting him with that first pick.

And like I said, the Lions have two first round picks - so they can afford the Crabtree pick and trade down with the other 1st rounder, OR they could select Crabtree and a top offensive tackle in the first.

Plenty of options for the Lions.

anonyn:

Imagine the Lions snagging Crabtree with the #1 overall and with their second pick (also in the first round) they add OT Phil Loadholt out of Oklahoma or Fenuki Tupuo of Oregon.

Those are two top prospects that immediately give the Lions impact on offense....and we're not even onto the second round at that point.

This could be a turnaround draft for the Lions - and with Millen gone, it should be a more sound draft than in years past.

Listen I was the guy that also did the little mock draft for the lions with the guy from queens in it and had all our picks there so I'm going to tell you this I have been a Lions fan for a long time and I will tell you this
THE LIONS WILL NOT TAKE A RECEIVER WITH THEIR FIRST PICK we have way to many needs and the new GM will not be able to take a wide out be cause 1 the pressure of the new position where you've got a team that just looses and has pick wide outs like 4 out of 6 years in the first round and it hasn't worked for 6 years you just won't take another receiver that high simply for the fan base and the patience for your job from the owner. 2 Every lions fan knows that the Lions have a ton of money invested in your wide receivers and as Brian Billick said "It's simple you just can't have 2 number 1's at end" and also we have a lot of money invested in Furrey and McDonald and a huge contract to pay off for Calvin. 3 Why in the middle of a rebuilding year where you have a lot of picks in the first day of the draft would you go with the most unimportant position on the football field in wide receiver... guys when your reading this you have to realize that great teams that win don't win because they have great wide outs they win because they have good defenses look at Baltimore when they won or the Bucs when they won they had great defenses or because they have great offensive lines and a good quarterback that can manage a team not because these teams have had two great receivers that make to much money it's because they have good defenses and good offensive lines not great receivers. 4 I know this is way to long but the reason why they traded Roy in the first place was because they felt they already had enough depth at wide out so why when your going to be 0-16 go with a player at a position where you felt you had enough depth in the first place. And also this isn't meant to be taken personally or for anyone to take offense I just wanted to get my views out .

UofM: Great stuff, appreciate the comments and I don't take any offense to what you post at all.

At present, Detroit could afford to trade Furrey and Standeford, keep Calvin & McDonald, add Crabtree with the first pick and then the best player available with the second selection in Rd. 1

Who the hell ya gonna cover? And if 'Pep comes back as the starting QB next year (or Orlov & Stanton are given the nod), then the Lions have an offense set to go minus an additonal RB.

From that point, your draft can focus on the critical defensive positions that are in need of upgrade: CB,DE, MLB.

Keep in mind also that the '09 draft will be one of the deepest talent pools in YEARS, because many of the underclassmen will be going pro this year because of the CBA coming up for revision....so additional depth in the later rounds will be plentiful than is the norm.

Calvin Johnson, Michael Crabtree & Shaun McDonald as your wideouts....Pep, Stanton or Orlov behind center.....add another O-lineman with your second pick in the first, keep Rudi Johnson another year and select a RB like RASHAD JENNINGS out of Liberty in the 2nd or 3rd round,to tag-team with him.

Then go after the defensive side. Crabtree is a PLAYMAKER and will help keep the chains moving...which puts less pressure on the D-side AND keeps them off the field longer.

Trust me, adding Crabtree would be like adding Colston to the Saints or Reggie Wayne to the Colts in that it gives the offense weapons all over the field.

Time will tell...but that's my feeling on it at present.

Hey, does anyone think that the lions could trade down thats what I've got them doing I think that a GM like Al Davis who probably is coveting a guy like Crabtree to go along with JaMarcus Russell and McFadden he would have the big three tandom that any team would love to have so I think he may go all out for a guy who can make the Raiders have a home run hitting offense that'll make teams pick their poison so I think Al Davis would be willing to give up their #1 this year a #2 this year a late round pick this year and maybe a #2 OR a #1 next year to get a guy like Crabtree. In 07 the Denver broncos were offering their 1st 2nd and 3rd as well as a first and third in 08 for Calvin Johnson so I think a GM especially Al Davis would give up that much for a player who a lot of people think can be very special in his career. Tell me what you think.

I can't see Crabtree being taken number 1... even if it means they trade him later on. But being a Lions fan... i'd love to see them to be able to trade down to like the 5th pick and also pick up another 2nd rd pick. The Lions are in desperate need of help everywhere obviously... but i'm predicting a LT and DE in the 1st rd.

Brandon:

Those two positons wouldn't be a bad thing either, and there are certainly plenty of players available with the talent to help make a difference in the Motor City.
